Foundation Repairs of the Guest Marina Pier at Toijala Harbor

In the summer of 2023, a diving inspection was carried out at the guest marina pier of Toijala Harbor, operated by the City of Akaa. The guest pier is located next to the public swimming pier and is based on pile foundations. A floating massive concrete pontoon pier has been installed as an extension to the pier. An underwater inspection was performed on the pier’s structures. Special attention was given to the foundation piles, diagonal supports, and overall condition. Some visible wear was already noticeable from above the waterline.

A detailed inspection report and repair proposal were provided to the client. The City of Akaa decided to proceed with the repair of the foundation piles. The piles had previously been extended about one meter below the waterline with steel collars. Almost all of these collars had corroded, making the structure unstable. Unwa Oy installed approximately 60 new steel collars on site. Additionally, we removed around 50 unnecessary pile structures to improve water safety in the area.

Collaboration with Unwa Oy has gone extremely well. All work has been carried out according to the agreed schedule, and although this has been a renovation project on an old guest marina pier, the cost estimates have been remarkably accurate.
